I remember taking a drum lesson with Mike Clark (former herbie hancock drummer) who is often labeled “the most sampled drummer in history”. He was saying how 90% percent of the time he wasn’t compensated OR asked to use the sample.
I think sampling laws may have been a little more loose back in early hip hop, but still…
