Lately I’ve been finding this new plugin TT Dynamic Range Meter by Pleasurize Music Foundation to be useful. I use it for two things, when I’m building a mix up I have it on the master so I can have nice big meters showing peak and RMS, this helps me keep things a conservative level from the start. The other thing I use this for is the MONO button. Setting your balances and even panning in Mono can really help. My interface doesn’t have a mono button on it (my 002r did but my 2626 doesn’t) so the MONO button on this plug makes it really simple.

My only complaint about this is the plugin is HUGE! It takes up nearly a 1/4 of my 22″ monitor
Oh yeah…it’s FREE! VST|RTAS|AU Mac/PC so everyone can play. A great weapon for fighting the loudness war, whichever side you’re on.
They also have an offline program to analyze the dynamic range of audio files, might be useful to some.

EDIT – NOVEMBER 4 2009
I just noticed Brainworx has the TT Dynamic Range Meter for download here

For those of you that missed this on the Twitter, Digidesign has released a few of the older plugins free.
Pro Tools 8 comes with a ton of new plugins, but it also comes bundled with a few very useful oldies. These are now free for anyone on a 7.3+ system. Look for the version 8 download for each of these. No iLok required for any of these, no codes, just run the installer.
Digidesign: D-Fi Bundle (Lo-Fi, Sci-Fi, Recti-Fi, and Vari-Fi)
Digidesign: Maxim
Bombfactory: Sansamp PSA-1
Trillium Lane Labs: TL AutoPan
Trillium Lane Labs: TL Utilities (TL Metro, TL InTune, TL MasterMeter)
Even if you don’t upgrade to Pro Tools 8 you can still use these. Sansamp is my favorite right now.
You’ll likely need to get the most recent Pace InterLok drivers [end user dropdown box on right]
Happy Holidays!

Flux Bitter Sweet has been updated to version 2 (1.2.0.18). Bitter Sweet is a free dynamics processor to manage audio transients. Turning the central button on the sweet side, decreases the transients amplitude. On the bitter side, the transients amplitude is magnified. Bitter Sweet also features a control for the signal to be processed. When the main position is engaged, the process affects the stereo signal. If Center is engaged, only the M signal of the internal MS matrix is processed. If stereo is selected, only the S signal from the MS matrix is processed.

Changes include:
- The transient processing doesn’t depend anymore of the signal level.
- Three new parameters have been added to allow a tighter control of the transients.
- Three transient durations can now be selected and a varying period of integration for transients processing can be accessed and a link function sets the output gain depending of the processing amount.
Flux Bitter Sweet II Available in VST or RTAS for Mac OS X and Windows.

It doesn’t get much cooler than this.

“Sumo is an effect plugin to make any sound as fat as you like.
It’s good for fattening up leads and basses, adding some weight to pads, making your vocals chubby and your drums obese”
It also comes with Japanglish instructions:
“Each button for another taste of revolution of lard. From selection detune of pressing, lag and deformation”
