The Best FREE Mac Apps & Utilities

Monday, July 27th, 2009

I haven’t been a Mac user for long so I asked a simple question on Twitter (@theaudiogeek), “What’s your favorite FREE Mac apps and utilities?” I got a ton of answers and after a few weeks of trying them out, here’s what I find I use on a daily basis, in no particular order.

New stuff! [added 10/18/2009]

More New stuff! [added 01/01/2010]

So that’s it, those are what I use most often. Of course if I had those all in the dock it would be ridiculous, instead I have a folder named “Most Used Apps” with aliases to some of them on the right side of the dock. As you can see I keep my dock minimal.

Don’t worry, this isn’t site isn’t going to be taken over by Mac fanaticism I just find these programs really helpful. I’ll keep this up to date adding new ones I find and crossing off the apps that fall from favor.

IKEA makes great furniture for your home studio. Honestly!

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Hey there! You’ve probably noticed there are a lot of broken images and links in this article. Part of that is stuff getting lost and partly because IKEA has discontinued products since this was first published. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Today I went to IKEA and picked up a cool inexpensive laptop stand for a great price. I’ve been meaning to write an article about all the stuff IKEA makes that inadvertently is great for recording studios, well today is the day. Some of the stuff in the list is modified and some is just the way it is.

DAVE – Laptop stand

You can of course use this as a laptop stand like I am now as I type this, but I think it would also be good for a drum machine, Monome, MicroKorg or other small lightweight electronics. I’ve bought sandwiches more expensive and less satisfying than this table. At this price there’s nothing to complain about except the surface is quite slick. If your laptop (like my MacBook Pro) or other device doesn’t have rubber feet it will slide around, or in the angled position it might slide right off the end! I’ve got some rubber drawer liner stuff that is indispensable (that means essential) for these situations.

Techniques for dealing with Phase

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Phase is a constant concern for recording and mixing engineers. Problems with phase can ruin your music, they can be easily avoided or corrected, but first you need understand how these problems occur.
This guide will attempt to explain almost everything there is to know about phase, what it is, how it happens, what it can sound like and some techniques to deal with it.

What is phase?
I’m going to consult my Engineering school textbook Audio In Media for this.

The time relationship between two or more sounds reaching a microphone or signals in a circuit. When this time relationship is coincident, the sounds or signals are in phase and their amplitudes are additive. When this time relationship is not coincident, the sounds or signals are out of phase and their amplitudes are subtractive.

No wonder people are confused about phase. Even I got confused at that, looking up other entries on phase in the book were even worse. I guess I shouldn’t read books.

I’ll try to break it down more simply.

Review: Softube Bass Amp Room

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

I’ve never really been happy with my In-The-Box bass tones, I’ve yet to find anything that sounds better than plugging into an amp. For the longest time there’s been very few options for plugins designed for bass. Softube is one of those cool small companies that make great plugins that look and sound great. Softube has a fairly recent entry into that tiny Bass amp modeling market with Bass Amp Room. I finally got some time to play with it today and here is my review.
