As part of the Home Recording 101 class at Revolution Audio, this past Thursday we did a shootout of 6 vocal mics. The mics selected were some of the top sellers at the store and ranged in price from the M-Audio Nova at $119 to the AT4060 at $1905.
You may wonder why there are so many M-Audio mics in this shoot out. Well that’s because they make good mics for the price, we had a variety on hand, and it seems like these mics don’t get a lot of attention.

The source was Kate singing the first line of ’9 Crimes’ by Damien Rice. Each recording is a separate take, though she is very consistent. No processing has been done. Drop all the files into your DAW, keep the piano track active if you like. Scroll down to the bottom to get the files. The order of the files has been changed so you’ll need to guess which is which.

This was a great exercise for me, thanks for posting this. It was fun for me (I’m a bit of a noob with all this audio stuff, but I love it) to listen to the different tracks and just hear the subtle differences. I don’t really know the reputations of the various mics, so my guesses would be wild guesses. Here’s what it sounded like to my inexperienced ears though:
A – a little harsh on the top end, not as smooth as some others (also, could hear a fragment of a conversation on the recording)
B – there was some sort of very deep rumble through the whole track…not sure if that was the mic’s fault (I also heard the rumble on the first few seconds of track E but it went away on that track)…this mic seemed a bit darker/warmer than the others to me
C – this mic was a touch hotter than most others; sounded good, but not great
D – I liked this mic, although not as much as F; this one had a bit more of a bump in the low-mids than F
E – hard to get past that low rumble followed by a pop of some sort in the latter part of the track…again, not sure if any of that was the mic’s fault
F – this mic seemed the most even, smooth and articulate to me

a – sounded good to my poor ears. This one seemed to have the most bleed from the headset when solo’ed. Is it more sensitive?
f – seemed to be the most “real” (whatever that means)
What’s amazing is how similar they are given the wide variation in price.

d – AKG 414
e – AT 4060

f sounds the most suitable for her voice
e is also quite suited but a diferent colour
b + d seem to lack presence
c seems quite noisy and resonant
a sound muffled and somehow cheap

ah the trusty 414…glad that one sounded like one of the top mics! Justifies my “can’t go wrong with a 414″ theory
however, the nova is a bit of shock…still, its a case of what’s more suited to a certain source.

Really, none of these sound that bad to me. And there is a lot of variation in the takes. But here it goes…
I like B and E the least.
I like C and D the next least.
Which leaves A and F as the two I liked best.
Overall, I think A sounds the nicest to me.

C and E possible tube mics? (Haven’t got a clue !).

C and D sound fuller and more 3D – I would guess these are the tube mics – I like them best, with C having the edge. Okay.

These were all very quickly recorded with an M-Audio Projectmix, which IMO sounds pretty poor. 6 mics on 6 stands going into the interface.
Jon, was the Solaris record in cardioid pattern like the others?
All the mics were in Cardioid.
Well, thanks for the time/effort. Did you notice there was ground noise on the 4060, at first I thought my system was out of wack. Just mentioning that.
My choice would be “f” as to which one I would use on her vocals. I feel that “c” would be an acceptable choice, if used with a de-esser. I’m interested in knowing which is which!

I don’t feel I have the ears yet to pick up the subtle differences but it is very interesting to do this as an exercise. I liked C and E the most. Next A, D, F and B. But what do I know!
