This past Thursday I helped record some upright piano for Allie Hughes at Revolution Audio. The piano is in the basement below the studio live room. I ran cables down through the floor for mics and headphones. The mics used were an AKG C3000 on the left side, and a C414B XLII on the right side, each are about a foot away which reduced the proximity effect as well as the mechanical noises. It’s a great old piano. I would have liked to have a ribbon overhead but I wasn’t running the session. Anyway here’s some pics.

Were you attempting to use the 3:1 rule in recording this piano? It is definitively a stereo micing technique that one must keep in mind but I don’t think it would apply here. Anyone?
Not at all, I set them up in a way that would be less obtrusive to Allie. Did the best I could with all the junk in the dungeon.
I heard that underneath the piano on the other side of the strings sounds good.
Next time I would try to do it more of an above style, have the stands coming in from the sides and upside down at about 45 degrees towards the strings. Pan hard left and right, and move the mics to get the desired width. None of this between the speakers nonsense.
There are only 3 pan positions.
when do we get to hear audio samples?
Unfortunately I can’t post samples from this session.
hey this is superb, since i like music i came across to you blog, this one is very useful to me ,please do post more of them regarding this.
