One of the ‘secrets’ from the MIAC/PAL show was the release of the new UAD card.

For the record

I did not hear about Sonar 8 from Robin Kelly of Cakewalk/Roland.

I heard about it at least a week before when I saw this post on the Cakewalk forum regarding the Sonar 8 Power book. Amazon had published it online and the word got out, Amazon has since taken it down.

Robin didn’t let out any secrets if there was any misunderstanding.

I just wanted to clear that up.

And Robin, my email address is audiogeekzine [at] gmail.com

anyone can use that to ask for advice, suggest things for this site, or send me NFRs for review :)

Some Ideas For FXpansion

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

These are some ideas I came up with for improving the FXpansion VST to RTAS adapter to make it a little more user friendly.

Clockwise from the top left.

  1. Correct Version #: currently V2.11 displays as V2.0 and that’s just careless.
  2. Saving and recalling plugin sets: being able to save a preset of your favorite plugins to wrap would be nice. That way if you unwrap them all you don’t have to search through the list for them again.
  3. Unwrap selected plugin: This is currently not an option in the Tools menu, there is Detect New; Wrap selected; and Unwrap all. To unwrap one you have to do them all. Annoying!
  4. Resize the window frames: As you can see there is a lot of unused white space there in the middle and a tiny little list you have to scroll though. Shrink that top part please!
  5. Plugin category sorting: the list currently displays various characteristics of the plugins but there is no way to sort the list to help you find what you’re looking for. Sorting by name, vendor, and type would be great.

I really think these 5 small improvements would help a lot.

MIAC 2008

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

I just got back from MIAC 2008 in Toronto. The Revolution Audio crew was on a mission to meet all our reps and product specialists, it’s great having them all in one place.

Miac2008

There honestly wasn’t anything too exciting, no groundbreaking announcements like they do at NAMM or Messe, but I did come away with some good secrets, which I’m not telling!

18 Visions studio videos with producer Machine

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

These videos are from 2006 but I thought they were pretty good. Machine has worked on some of my favorite albums so it’s cool to see some how he works particularly with drums and vocal recording. I’m not a fan of Eighteen Visions but I like the studio videos. Embedding videos here proves to be a pain in the ass, I’m sorry if they all start playing at once!

How Pro Tools Is Destroying Music

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

This article is a steaming pile of bullshit, and honestly thats being too nice about it.

Pop Matters – How Pro Tools Is Destroying Music

“Computer programs are killing the old recording studios, and the engineering knowhow once harnessed there is disappearing.” - Scott Oranburg

Read the comments by RWC, I can’t say it any better than him.

Quote:
“With the human touch inherent in any performance autocorrected digitally, we lose much of the element that gives music its emotive contours. Sometimes, playing slightly behind the beat or slightly below the correct pitch is what makes a piece inspiring”

“I am not sure about how anyone else works, but the only time I break out such tools is when it is such a joke, that it has absolutely no chance of not being LAUGHED AT to begin with. This brings total trash into the realm of mediocre.”

“I, and most other competent people, aren’t going to snap to grid or Melodyne an amazing fucking song just because the chorus is slightly faster than the verse.” - RWC

This is the best time to be making music, you don’t need to worry about what the label wants, just make good music and do whatever it takes to do it. Sure, budgets are lower, a lot lower these days, but its just less money for artists to waste on extravagance in the studio.
