Jon, cool site! I love your sound files. I was a die-hard fan of the shure sm57 for years. I picked up a couple of the gls audio es57 microphones for $30 bucks each from speakerrepair.com. They claimed to be just like the shure sm-57. I thought what the heck, it’s only $30 bucks. I was completely shocked when I tested them. They sounded better than the shure’s. After the 57′s sounded soooooo good, I had to try their 58 clones too. They call them the es58 (of course). Same deal! Sounded better than my shure sm58 mics. I’ve been telling people ever since. Why spend $100 on a shure when you can get a better mic for $30. It’s crazy!!!
Later.

Thats awesome Jerry thanks for the tip, I’ll check them out for s(h)ure!
Great shootout! I was amazed by the difference. My favorites were the Remo Ambassador Coated and Remo Powerstroke 3 Coated. I didn’t like the Evans Genera G2 Clear or Remo Pinstripe Clear at all.
did it blindfolded ..preferred #7 Aquarian… thanks for doing this test
I don’t want to take credit for this test, I DID NOT record these files. Slap Back on Gear Slutz did.
This is good, it is surpising what a diffwerence in sound that can result from these changes.
Getting the instruments in shape before recording is a very good plan indeed.
