Alright… Since the the release of AGZ’s “Toys Breaking” Sample set I have noticed a gaggle of folks requesting organized REX file versions of some of the samples. Knowing Jon, like me has little time to spend on such things… especially for the $5.00 he asks for the set I figured I would give a easy to follow 4 step guide to using Propellerheads Recycle 2.1 to create your own REX files from the samples you find most deserving of the transformation. I swear its really easy!

STEP 1

Open Recycle. Ubersimple so far eh? Upon opening the programRecycle will prompt you to choose the Audio file (.aif,.aiff,.wav,.wave,.rcy,.rex,.rx2) that is to be operated on.

step1

STEP 2

Now that you have the file loaded in you must let Recycle know how many bar, and beats are in the loop. You must also specify the time signature. This can be determined by simple counting along. Unless they are samples of throat singers… good luck!

step2

STEP 3

Alright, this is the most complicated of my four step program. I’m not even sure that complicated is the right word… This step leaves room for user error. If your REX file turns out to be rubbish it is likely because of this step here. First thing you must do is move the sensitivity slider up until it detects all or most of the beats within your loop. If you get to a point where the vast majority of beats are accounted for and then it starts randomly slapping cuts in spots that would only work in a IDM/Aphex twin situation then back off a little bit. Any beats that it hasn’t detected on its own you will have to manually input. you can do this using the pencil tool. Once you draw a line in you can grab the nice little arrow at the top of the waveform window and slide it around until it is perfect. Be sure to zoom right in as close as possible to get the most accurate cuts.

step3

STEP 4

Now for the finale… its not that spectacular. File/Save. Done.

step4

EFFECTS

If you wanted to make use of Recycle’s effects. You must remember to input the bar/beat/time signature info, make sure the left and right locators are defined. MOST importantly the little button i always forget… The Preview toggle button. It looks like…. THIS previewmode

Any effects you apply at this point may be altered at a later date in recycle. The settings all save within the REX file. So its handy on that occasion where you hear your loop and say, “what in tarnations(if you are making beats with Yosemite Sam) was I thinking when I screwed up my loop beyond recognition and application?”

REX Compatibility

The wonderful thing about REX files of course is that they are not only for proprietary use within Reason… although i do love Dr. Rex. He cures all my dreadful beat ailments. The REX format is compatible with a wide range of software including…

  • Propellerhead Software Reason
