Yacht Rock is back!

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Yacht RockAnother episode of Yacht Rock was posted on January 27 2008. Those who know what Yacht Rock is, really, really need to check this out. Who knew history could be so funny.

About Yacht Rock:
What can be said about Yacht Rock that hasn’t been said by various magazines, newspapers and disc jockeys across the country? J.D. Ryznar and Hunter Stair’s saga detailing the unknown mythical origins of a previously obscure genre of music struck the audience like a lightning bolt on its first episode, much like fellow 101 breakout House of Cosbys. Unlike HoC, however, Yacht Rock was never sued by its iconic characters’ real life counterparts. In fact, it is said that at one time or another, just about every musician lovingly portrayed in the series has witnessed and enjoyed it behind closed doors. Yacht Rock enjoyed success on levels and in ways previously unattained by 101 shows, its title becoming a household phrase at radio stations, a bin at your local record store and a category on iTunes. But beneath its pop cultural triumph was an artistic one that often went undescribed: Yacht Rock’s stories were always clever and sometimes downright genius in their assembly, weaving trivia, common knowledge, exaggerations and fabrications into a rope strong enough to hold it at the #1 position for an unbelievable number of non-consecutive months, setting audience share records at Channel 101 that are unlikely to be broken any time soon and sweeping the 2005 Channy Awards. Ironically, Channel 101′s most memorable show came to its end quietly and unremarkably, not unlike some of the careers it saluted with a smirk. Instead of choking on its vomit in a Paris bathtub or overdosing on a Hollywood sidewalk, Yacht Rock simply told us one last story about Steely Dan, then hoisted its sails and drifted away while a satisfied crowd waved goodbye from the docks, exactly one incredible year after its historical debut. Bye, Yacht Rock. We loved you.

XLN Audio releases Retro ADpack For Addictive Drums

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

XLN Audio has announced the release of the Retro ADpak for Addictive Drums.

Retro is the first “ADpak” expansion for Addictive Drums and features three classic Ludwig drum sets from the 60s and 70s with cymbals from Paiste and Sabian. The drums were recorded in Studios 301 Stockholm in a big recording room with a rich ambience.
Retro expands the Addictive Drums library and allows you to mix and match between the original drums and the new vintage kits. Retro also includes cowbells, tambourines and hand claps. Retro is great for a vintage sound with presets inspired by classic songs, but you can also use the modern presets for an up-to-date sound full of character or turn to the RetroMental soundbank for a chance to hear the Ludwig kits like you’ve never heard them before. With the Retro ADpak you get over 1300 MIDI loops and 70 presets that will “get you groovin’ in Motown”, “banging your head to booming heavy Rock”, and “tunin’ out to psychedelic Rock’n'Roll”.

Retro ADpak for Addictive Drums is available now with an MSRP of $149.95.

Stop the evil DiMA!

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Dear fellow geeks,

Recently I have been seeing a few things on the interweb about a very quiet battle for the future of music and the internet. Depending on who you are, some of the proposed changes could be extremely lucrative… or they could make it hard to sit down for a while. Basically on January 28th of 2008, the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) began hearings to set mechanical rates for the songwriters and music publishers of the United States of America (yeah U.S.A…. you know that place where they have record budgets that are more than $35.00 and a few pieces of pocket lint).

You may be thinking “why the hell should I care?” In reply to this I might ask “why the hell WOULDN’T you care? Basically with the ever evolving music industry these rates could be the songwriter’s main form of income in the future… or in the case that the DiMA prevails it could be the reason every artist on planet earth starves to death catapulting the world back into the dark ages where music is replaced by computer generated beeping and machine noise that eventually drives us all to kill each other… (Matt takes a breath…) WELL maybe not that extreme, but you never know. I any case I will leave up to you to reason this letter from the president of the National Music Publisher’s Association (NMPA) David Israelite. When you are done you can decide the merit in asking yourself the “why the hell should I care?” As a aspiring songwriter I will be trying to find some way I can aid in turning the outcome away from the desires of the evil DiMA. You should too.
