Update on Computer troubles

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

Happy New Year!

Just a quick update on my virus troubles, hopefully it will help someone with the same problem.

Here is what was happening. I was getting frequent freezing and crashes, the system was very unstable. I would open Task Manager, then open my computer and click on the C:\ drive. The task manager would show something called kill.exe with an excel icon. Using Spyware Terminator’s realtime protection it would block svchost.exe within a few seconds to a minute later the computer would freeze. This is what forced me to reinstall windows.

So anyway, I reinstalled Windows XP Pro and also installed Ubuntu on a different partion. Everything looked good, did the automatic updates etc. Then I reconnected my other Hard drives. And guess what, the virus was still there, kill.exe was in the task manager. So I sought to get a new anti-virus and found AVG Free Edition, It got rid of the virus and many others I wasn’t aware of. I highly recommend this anti-virus program to anyone, even if you use Firefox ;)

So I got rid of that virus, but the only problem was that double clicking on a drive from My Computer no longer worked. It didn’t know what to do because it couldn’t find the virus anymore. I had to right click on the drive and choose open, setting the autorun to open with explorer didn’t even work.

Finally today I got around to fixing that, I went into the registry, (go to run, type: regedit) did a search for tel.xls (the virus as shown by AVG) and it was in the data field of several entries. I cleared the data fields and closed regedit. I checked in my computer and it opens fine now. Hooray for me!
