Who: General Fuzz
What: Cool Aberrations
Sounds like: relaxing eclectic chillout music
Cool Aberrations is the result of James Kirsch’s inspired collaborations with some very talented, creative friends. Very emotional, but not depressing, it is also very inspiring, I feel happier and more creative just listening to it. The styles of music vary throught the album, from ambient to funky, but everything fits together really well.
All songs were composed using Ableton Live 5 and James mastered the album using Ozone 3.
VSTs used: Absynth 3, B4 II, Cameleon5000, CamelPhat3, CamelSpace, GURU, MicoTonic, Melodyne, Mr Tramp, Mr Ray, Pentagon I, Slayer2, Sonic Synth 2, SuperCamelPhat2, Tau2, Wusikstation, Vanguard, Stylus RMX, and Z3ta+

I own Reason Adapted which came bundled with my ProTools LE system, while it does have some great sounds included I wanted more. While browsing the Propellerhead site I found a page listing many free ReFills. Unfortunately I only own the limited Adapted version, and most of the free downloads are only available for Reason 3 users, but there are a few free for everyone. Here are a few I’ve found:

Celebrating it’s 2 year aniversary, The Freesound Project has over thirty thousand samples available under the CC Sampling+ licence, with hundreds of samples uploaded daily.
One of the samples was used in Children Of Men (and properly credited), I wonder if it will be the next Wilhelm scream?
If you have field recordings, Foley, or sound effects that you recorded and would like to share, please contribute to this great site.

Ricci Adams’ Musictheory.net is a great site for easily learning music theory. His flash based site has lessons, trainers, and utilities. You can also download the whole site and study offline without distractions like…the internet.

The lessons are easy to follow with large visuals and not too much text. You control when to move forward or go back, and has a handy print button if you need that too.
One of the best parts of the site is the Trainers section where you can test yourself with note, key, interval, or triads, keyboard, guitar, or brass, and interval, scale, or chord ear training.

Taking a break from ProTools this week I will attempt to get you started with automating in FL Studio. FL Studio makes it so easy to automate almost anything you can think of with just a few clicks. Check the hint bar for the red icon indicating that the control can be automated.

Then you can automate in four ways, by drawing automation clips, pattern based events, by recording your mouse movements, or by linking to a controller and recording those movements.

Continuing with automation in FL Studio lets move on to some realtime recording of automation.
Recording automation in a pattern is one of the easiest ways to quickly get something automated. Just hit record and play and as your prerecorded pattern plays fiddle those controls with the mouse, hit stop and they will be added to the event editor. If you want to change them you can either redraw the events or rerecord the performance.
